Home hair color tips

Youve decided that you want to change your color but arent sure if youre going to do it yourself or go to the salon. Doing it yourself means youre spending less but will theres also a chance that youll ruin your hair especially if this is the first time youre doing it. Going to the salon may mean better results but theyre also really expensive. So what do you do?

Actually, many home hair color kits are simple to follow, less expensive and still produce great results provided you follow the instructions implicitly. You just have to take the time to do it, be patient while working through your hair and just be confident and maybe have a friend on hand to help you do the hard-to reach places. Here are a few tips to help make it easier for you to color your hair at home.

First, you need to create a space with all the materials you need within reach. Getting up and moving about to get your materials increases your chances of creating spills and messes everywhere you go. Remember that youre dealing with dyes that may not be easy to clean depending on what type of surface the spill on so you have to be careful.

Second, you need old towels to protect your clothes or you may change into old clothes when youre ready to color. You may need to apply some petroleum jelly like Vaseline onto the hairline and on the neck to prevent your skin from staining. Home color kits usually have gloves included in them so be sure to use them.

Third, make sure that your hair is dry when you are ready to color. Color does not stick to wet hair.

Fourth, make sure that the color youre going to apply will complement your skin and eye color. Never go two levels darker or lighter than your original color too. The two-level color mark is the standard for keeping your hair color as natural as possible. However, if the point of your hair color is to make a statement then the decision is up to you.

Fifth, after rinsing, it may be better to air dry your hair rather than exposing it to the harsh heat of the blowdryer. However, if you find that the color you applied is darker than you wanted, you may shampoo immediately to dull the color. If you want the color to stay on longer, avoid unnecessary styling products. Also, never re-color your hair immediately after. Wait at least 2 weeks to make sure that your hair has had ample time to adjust to the new hair color. This will also keep your hair from being too dry as a result of the chemicals of the hair color.
