Causes of Hair Loss
Hair loss is commonly experienced by both men and women. If you notice a few hair strands on your pillow when you wake up, that’s normal. When you brush and you notice a few more strands on your hair brush or comb, that’s still normal. Normal hair loss is roughly 50-100 hair strands in a day. This is all part of the cycle of growth of your hair. However, if your hair loss is more than this figure, you need to consult a doctor for further testing.
There are many causes of hair loss. The most easily identifiable is a reaction to certain medication. When you’re taking medicines for heart problems, high blood pressure, depression and even arthritis, chances are you’ll be experiencing some hair loss. Even women who have taken birth control pills report that they’ve experienced some hair loss because of it. Also, some medical treatments result in hair loss, like when you undergo chemotherapy or radiation therapy. The process ultimately destroys some of your hair cells resulting in hair loss but when your treatment is done and your body has regained its balance, your hair will have a chance to grow back again.
Most women experience hair loss coincidentally with hormonal changes in their body. Pregnancy and childbirth are the most common causes of hair loss. Menopause also triggers hair loss. Hair grows back though after 3 months or so when the body has also stabilized
Too much styling and the use of too many chemical treatments on the hair can also eventually lead to hair loss. For instance, if you’re used to wearing pig tails or pony tails on your hair, did you know that pulling on your hair too tightly can cause traction alopecia? This could lead to scarring of your scalp too and then that may lead to permanent hair loss.
Believe it or not, stress can contribute to hair loss. If you’ve recently been under physical or emotional stress due to an accident or family emergency, then it’s quite natural for you to experience hair loss. Hair loss is triggered by a drastic change in your body’s cycle and thus affects hair growth or lack of it.
One nasty cause of hair loss is fungi. Fungal infections usually affect the scalp but are easily treatable with antifungal medication.
Lastly, hair loss is also a result of poor nutrition. When you’ve radically changed your diet or are affected by an eating disorder, you’re sure to experience hair loss because your body’s normal balance is disrupted. Letting your body find its way back to its normal pace should get rid of the hair loss.
